In response to the persistent challenge of gun violence, Minneapolis has witnessed a surge of community-driven initiatives aimed at fostering safety and healing. These programs, rooted in local engagement and evidence-based strategies, are making significant strides in addressing the issue.
Restoration Incorporated: Healing Communities of Trauma
Restoration Incorporated focuses on reducing gun violence and healing community trauma. Their mission is to restore individuals, families, and communities impacted by life’s challenges through trauma-informed, spiritual, cultural, indigenous, and restorative practices. The organization offers various events and opportunities for community involvement, emphasizing the importance of collective action in violence prevention.
Group Violence Intervention: A Collaborative Approach
The City of Minneapolis has implemented the Group Violence Intervention (GVI) strategy, which unites community members, law enforcement, and social services to address gun violence associated with groups and gangs. GVI works with individuals at the highest risk, helping them understand the consequences of continued violence and connecting them to support services that provide resources, address trauma, and offer pathways away from violence.
Community Unite Violence Prevention Project
Sabathani Community Center’s Community Unite Violence Prevention Project empowers young people and strengthens community bonds to tackle youth violence. The program offers mentorship, career and employment services, empowerment training, community conversations, and recreational activities. It targets youth and adults aged 10–35 from low-income households in South Minneapolis neighborhoods, aiming to create a safer and stronger community.
Fund for Safe Communities: Supporting Grassroots Efforts
The Minneapolis Foundation’s Fund for Safe Communities has awarded grants to several organizations working to prevent violence and promote healing. These include B.E.S.T., Circle of Discipline, MAD DADS of Minneapolis, Standard Edition Women, and T.O.U.C.H. Outreach. Each organization employs unique strategies, such as mentorship, boxing, holistic support, trauma-informed coaching, and community-driven violence prevention initiatives, to address the root causes of violence and support affected individuals and families.
Next Step: Hospital-Based Violence Intervention
Next Step is a hospital-based violence intervention program that connects survivors of violent injuries to resources and support. A partnership between Hennepin Healthcare, North Memorial, Children’s Minneapolis, Abbott Northwestern, and the City of Minneapolis, Next Step aims to reduce re-injury and re-hospitalization, support positive development and holistic healing, and interrupt the cycle of community violence.
These initiatives exemplify the power of community-driven efforts in addressing gun violence. By fostering collaboration, providing support, and promoting healing, Minneapolis is taking significant steps toward creating a safer and more resilient community.
